Reasons I Love Working Out in the Morning

I can’t begin this post without addressing the symbolism of September 11. Isn’t it crazy how a certain event in life can make you remember exactly where you were, what you were doing and how you felt? It’s as if time stopped for a second. The United States came together as a nation and put aside our differences and prejudices and just FELT. On that day 12 years ago, we were one in the same. My hope for this country moving forward is that we continue to remember that feeling: the oneness, the unity and most importantly, our freedom.

Moving along to a less somber topic… The reasons I love working out in the morning!

ReasonsILoveWorkingOutintheMorning

Many of you commented on yesterday’s post about overcoming morning crankiness and said that your morning workout sets the tone for the day. I completely agree! Here are some of the reasons I love working out in the morning:

  • The feeling– Nothing compares to waking up before the sun. The morning dew still on the car. The quietness, the stillness. The feeling that you are making yourself better while most people are still asleep.
  • And also the “Wait, am I really at the gym?” feeling – I start waking up about 15 minutes into my morning workout. By that time, I’ve already tricked my body into going to the gym. It doesn’t have time to sit there and tell me no. I’m there. I’m doing it. Then I start to push harder because I’m proud of myself for sacrificing my precious beauty sleep 😉
  • Sets the tone– I don’t know about you but I am MUCH more productive when I start the day with a workout. My endorphins kick into high gear and I’m pretty much bouncing off the walls afterward. There’s no shaking the smile on my face!
  • Breakfast– Is it just me or does breakfast taste even better after a workout?
  • Group exercise– This morning I went to a spinning class at 5:45. Let me just say that the people in this class were more energetic than ANY group exercise class I’ve ever been to. We were all singing Blurred Lines by 6 a.m. (and of course making fun of the Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus VMA performance). It was obvious this class was full of regulars but all of us newbies fit right in. I might have to make this a weekly routine!
  • It’s done– It’s over with! No more workout for the rest of the day! What a great feeling. When I workout in the morning I don’t have to worry about the crowd after work, waiting in line for machines, or if I’m going to have enough energy to complete a workout after work. I’m free to do whatever I please for the rest of the day 🙂

What do you love most about working out in the morning? What time of day do you prefer to work out? Also, do you eat before your morning workouts?

5 Ways to Overcome Morning Crankiness

We all have those mornings where we wake up on the wrong side of the bed. For some unknown reason, we’re set off by the smallest things. Let’s take this morning, for example. I wake up already in a weird mood because of a dream. Of course it was one of those sappy, lovesick dreams and I’m thinking to myself, “WHY did I just have a dream about that?”

Fast forward to me forgetting my breakfast at home, my SunPass running out of toll money, 15 various sappy songs coming onto my iPod and we’ve got a recipe for a splendid morning.

So what do we do on those nothing-is-going-right-and-it’s-only-9:00-days? I’ve come up with a few simple solutions:

1. Listen to happy music. Whatever music puts you in a good mood (preferably not sappy music, in my case) put it on. Now.
2. If you’re in the comfort of your own home, DANCE. When’s the last time you just danced around the house? I do it all the time. I promise it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re dancing.

4. Plan something later in the day to look forward to. It may be getting your nails done, enjoying a long walk, taking a bubble bath, going to the gym, reading a good book. Have some “me” time.

5. Realize that if your biggest problem is forgetting your hardboiled eggs at home or a rip in your shirt, your life is pretty freakin’ awesome today.

Starting Off On The Right Foot

I woke up rather early this morning to complete a workout before I started my day. I completed a chest and triceps circuit which took me about 45 minutes to complete. Then, I came home to my favorite part of the morning: oatmeal and eggs 😛

Totally kidding…. maybe. While I do love a great post-workout breakfast, there are a few things that make me smile in the morning.

1. Peace and quiet

My morning is my “me” time — I blog, drink my cup of coffee, get organized for the day. Waking up before everyone else gives me time to gather my thoughts and relax before my usual jam-packed days.

2. Waking up to family

This right here’s my mama (que country accent.) I’ve recently moved back home since I’ll be in Chicago all summer and have someone subleasing my room at school. My absolute favorite thing in the world is having a cup of coffee and talking with this beautiful woman first thing in the mornin’. She’s great, I tell ya.

3. A great workout

To say I love starting my day with a workout would be an understatement. I love working out in the morning because it gives me so much energy and puts me in such a great mood for the rest of the day. No one likes a grumpy girl (especially this one!)

4. Reminding myself what I’m thankful for

I always start the day with a prayer. I thank God for allowing me to wake up and live another day of my life and have the opportunity to make Him proud. Whenever I’m stressed out during the day (going to school, finding time to plan meals/work out, etc.), I always remind myself that these are blessings. I’m blessed that I have the opportunity to go to school and study. While I’m waiting in traffic, I remember I’m blessed to have a car to drive. I have a great family to come home to. Counting my blessings makes for one happy, happy gal, especially if it’s done in the morning :-).

What’s your favorite way to start the day? Do you have any morning rituals?
