5 Ways to Overcome Morning Crankiness

We all have those mornings where we wake up on the wrong side of the bed. For some unknown reason, we’re set off by the smallest things. Let’s take this morning, for example. I wake up already in a weird mood because of a dream. Of course it was one of those sappy, lovesick dreams and I’m thinking to myself, “WHY did I just have a dream about that?”Β

Fast forward to me forgetting my breakfast at home, my SunPass running out of toll money, 15 various sappy songs coming onto my iPod and we’ve got a recipe for a splendid morning.

So what do we do on those nothing-is-going-right-and-it’s-only-9:00-days? I’ve come up with a few simple solutions:

1. Listen to happy music. Whatever music puts you in a good mood (preferably not sappy music, in my case) put it on. Now.
2. If you’re in the comfort of your own home, DANCE. When’s the last time you just danced around the house? I do it all the time. I promise it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re dancing.

4. Plan something later in the day to look forward to. It may be getting your nails done, enjoying a long walk, taking a bubble bath, going to the gym, reading a good book. Have some “me” time.
5. Realize that if your biggest problem is forgetting your hardboiled eggs at home or a rip in your shirt, your life is pretty freakin’ awesome today.

  1. SO SO SO true!!! Loved the last line especially πŸ™‚ I am an expert dancer at home. Do you watch Grey’s Anatomy? I love that line where Meredith says “Dancing makes you brave.” A good dance around the house always picks up my mood if I’m having a bad day πŸ™‚

      • Oh my gosh, you definitely do!!! It’s such a good show (got kinda weird about like season 4? – I can’t remember exactly which season – during the writer’s strike) but I still love it! Gotta bust out the hands in the air dance around (that’s my fav dance move!)

  2. I have the WEIRDEST dreams in the entire world. I often am plagued by dreams that seems too real and I wake up in a funk. Breakfast typically clears that right up for me. One of my other favorite things to do when I need a little AM cheer is listen to a funny radio show.

  3. Great tips! Bad dreams always start me off on a rocky note, and when that happens writing down what I’m thankful for and looking at pictures of happy memories usually sets me straight. I love your advice of finding something to look forward to though! Even if it’s as small as a bubble bath, that would help!

  4. Once I read “#1”, I went over to YouTube and looked up Colbie Caillat’s song “Bubbly”. I’m pretty sure that meets the criteria of an upbeat, happy song that is perfect to combat morning crankiness. πŸ™‚ Great list and great post! πŸ™‚

  5. My #1 solution – go for a run. πŸ˜‰ Whenever I don’t start a running day off with a run, I always seem to be just a tad crankier. (I’m usually tired by my rest days, so the extra sleep is always welcomed.) Taking some time out to do whatever you enjoy–running, listening to music, dancing like a crazy person–does wonders!

  6. love love love this!! i have so been guilty of waking up cranky because of a dream! and i actually JUST started combatting morning crankiness by making a mental list of things im thankful for, and it helps soo much! that is a GREAT tip! and i think its just a great habit to get in to!

  7. Something that has really helped me is to avoid social media until I’m fully awake! I was in the habit of checking instagram or fb as soon as my alarm went off each morning as a ‘wake-me-up-slowly-lest-i-kill-someone’ attempt, but more often than not, I’d see something online that sent my entire attitude into a tailspin. Now I get up and at ’em with a smile on my face before I try to make heads or tails of the online world! πŸ™‚

  9. Oh wow, I swear cranky mornings (worryingly regular for me!) knock off like an hour of my day because I mope around contemplating how rubbish I feel. Definitely putting every single one of these to the test. You’re a star! I think your blog is changing my life bit by bit haha x

  10. Wait… there are people who don’t dance around their house every day?? If there is music on (including in commercials, during a tv show or movie, in my head), I’m busting a move πŸ™‚
