If you’re a diehard Chipotle fan like me, chances are you find yourself there at least once a week. I try to make healthy swaps at Chipotle since I’m there so much and my burrito bowl usually includes chicken, half brown rice/half black beans, fajita veggies, mild salsa, a little guacamole and lettuce.
Today I decided to treat myself after not having a burrito for two years. Yes, two years. Almost three. I remember the date because it was the day before I got my wisdom teeth out my freshman year of college.
Needless to say, it did not disappoint.
I opted for the Barbacoa today instead of the chicken because it used to be my burrito staple back in the day (along with sour cream and cheese — the works ;-).) I decided to look at the nutritional comparison, just for the heck of it, and I was shocked. Here it is:
Left: Barbacoa (shredded beef); Right: Chicken
I expected the chicken to be MUCH lower in fat and calories, probably because I assumed it was lean chicken breast (silly me.) While it is a bit higher in protein, it’s also higher in calories which shocked me. I’m almost kicking myself for neglecting my beloved Barbacoa for so long because I thought I was making a much healthier choice!
This just shows that if you’re watching your weight or calories, you have to be super careful when you’re eating out at restaurants. Sometimes the “healthy” options are just as bad as the unhealthy ones! Be sure to keep an eye out for things like this and, as always, once in a while won’t kill ya. Everything in moderation :-).
